Search opportunity research — Decision tool

Is this search opportunity worth building?

Score an idea before it becomes a website, content program, product, or expensive commitment.

The Scorecard does not predict rankings. It helps identify which assumptions are supported, which remain weak, and what should be tested next.

Search Opportunity Scorecard v0.1

How scoring works

How scoring works

The Scorecard asks 12 questions across 4 dimensions. Answer each question on a 0–4 scale, from Not established to Strong. Each dimension is worth up to 25 points for a total of 100.

  • Demand reality — is the search behavior real, persistent, and attached to a decision?
  • SERP improvability — can you publish something materially more useful than what already ranks?
  • Evidence advantage — do you have first-hand, defensible evidence competitors cannot cheaply copy?
  • Asset potential — can the attention compound into an owned action, economics, or repeat-use asset?

Your score falls into one of three bands: STOP (0–39), IMPROVE (40–69), or GO TO VALIDATION (70–100). The lowest-scoring dimension tells you what to test next.

Score a real opportunity

Answer all 12 questions. Your answers are scored in this browser and are never uploaded.

Demand reality
1. Is there direct evidence that the target audience actively searches for this problem, decision, or outcome?
2. Is the demand persistent or recurring rather than a short-lived spike?
3. Do the queries indicate a real decision or action rather than passive curiosity?
SERP improvability
4. Are the current results incomplete, outdated, generic, or poorly matched to the search intent?
5. Can you publish something materially more useful than the pages already ranking?
6. Is the competitive and authority gap realistic enough to test without pretending it is easy?
Evidence advantage
7. Do you have first-hand experience, proprietary observations, original analysis, or credible source access?
8. Can you publish evidence or decision logic that competitors cannot reproduce cheaply?
9. Can the evidence support more than one useful page, example, tool, or update?
Asset potential
10. Can the resulting attention lead to an owned action such as a tool use, inquiry, subscription, product, or service?
11. Are the likely economics valuable enough to justify continued investment?
12. Can the work compound beyond one ranking or one article?

What the score means

What the score means

STOP — 0 to 39

The opportunity is not supported well enough to justify building yet.

Suggested next step: Identify the weakest assumption and gather evidence before committing more time or capital.

IMPROVE — 40 to 69

The opportunity has credible elements, but at least one critical dimension remains weak.

Suggested next step: Run a narrow validation test focused on the lowest-scoring dimension.

GO TO VALIDATION — 70 to 100

The opportunity is strong enough to justify a controlled validation test — not an unlimited build.

Suggested next step: Define a small experiment with a fixed budget, success metric, and stopping rule.

Methodology and limitations

Methodology and limitations

  • This is a decision aid, not a ranking forecast.
  • A high score supports testing, not unlimited investment.
  • A low score identifies missing evidence; it does not prove that an opportunity can never work.
  • Scores should be revisited when new evidence appears.
